원곡 : 영국 콘웰에서 코니시 캐롤 "The First Nowell"

저들밖에 한밤중에 The First Noel 은 영국 남서부 끝에 위치한 콘웰 Cornwell 지방에서 콘웰어 Cornish 로 불리던 크리스마스 캐롤이 원곡입니다.

 

코니시 Cornish 찬송가에 1823년 및 1833년 버전에 해당 노래가 원곡으로 실려 있습니다.

 

영어가사 : 1871년 존 스테이너 버전, 1986년 New English Hymnal 버전

이후, 1871년 영국 작곡가 존 스테이너 경 Sir John Stainer이 출판한 Carols, New and Old에 4절의 영어 가사로 등재되었고, 1986년 새로운 영어 찬송가 The New English Hymnal에서 현대 영어버전의 6절 영어 가사가 현재 주로 불리우고 있는 버전입니다.
