정월대보름 or 상원, 영어로: Daeboreum or Great Full Moon 

정월 대보름(正月 大보름) 또는 대보름은 음력 1월 15일로, 오기일(烏忌日)이라고도 하며, 한자어로는 '상원 上元' 이라고 합니다.

 

'상원'은 도교적인 명칭으로, 삼원(상원, 중원, 하원) 중 첫 번째로, 상원/ 중원/ 하원은 각각 음력 1월/ 7월/ 10월의 보름날로 음력절기로 상원은 입춘-우수 立春-雨水, 중원은 입춘-처서 立秋-處暑, 하원은 입동-소설 立冬-小雪  정도에 해당합니다.

 

태음력으로 설날이 지나고, 첫 보름달이 뜨는 날로, 대보름 전날인 음력 14일과 당일에는 여러 곳에서 새해의 운수에 관한 여러 풍습이 있습니다.

 

대보름에는 오곡밥을 지어 먹으며, 아침 일찍 부럼이라고 하는 껍질이 단단한 견과류나 과일을 깨물어서 마당에 버리는데, 이렇게 하면 1년 내내 부스럼이 생기지 않는다고 합니다.

 

그리고, 귀밝이술을 마시고, 밤에는 뒷동산에 올라가 달맞이를 하며 소원 성취를 빌고 1년 농사를 점치기도 하였다. 즉 달빛이 희면 많은 비가 내리고 붉으면 가뭄이 들며, 달빛이 진하면 풍년이 오고 흐리면 흉년이 든다고 하였다.

 

On the day of Daeboreum, people eat five-grain rice and in the early morning, they chew on hard nuts or fruits, called "bureom," and throw them into the yard. It is believed that by doing so, bureom, a kind of skin inflammation, will not occur throughout the year.

 

Additionally, they drink Guibak-ju, a kind of cold liquor, and in the evening, they climb up the back hill to greet the moon, making wishes for successful outcomes and predicting the harvest for the year. It is said that if the moonlight is bright, there will be abundant rainfall, if it's red, drought may occur, and if the moonlight is dark, it indicates a bountiful harvest, while cloudy moonlight foretells a famine.

 

 

대보름 주요 음식

부럼 Bureom

정월 보름날 새벽이나 전날 저녁에 부스럼이 생기지 말라는 의미에서 밤·잣·호두 등 단단한 껍질을 가진 견과류의 부럼을 먹는다.

Bureom is eaten on the morning or the evening of Daeboreum, symbolizing a wish for the absence of pestilence. It consists of nuts with hard shells such as pine nuts, walnuts, or chestnuts.

오곡밥 Five-Grain Rice

쌀, 보리, 조, 수수, 팥 등의 다섯 가지 이상의 곡물을 섞어 지은 오곡밥을 먹습니다.

Five-grain rice is made by mixing five or more grains such as rice, barley, foxtail millet, Sorghum bicolor, and red beans.

나물 또는 진채식   Namul or Jinchaesik

무, 오이, 호박, 박, 가지, 버섯, 고사리 등을 말려둔 것을 먹는다. 지역에 따라, 아홉 가지 나물을 또는 열 가지 나물을 먹기도 합니다.

Various seasoned vegetables like radish, cucumber, pumpkin, Asian chives, eggplants, mushrooms, and bracken ferns are eaten. In some regions, people eat nine or ten types of namul.

 

약밥   Yakbap

물에 불린 찹쌀을 시루에 찐 뒤 꿀이나 설탕·참기름·대추 등을 쪄서 거른 것을 섞고, 다시 진간장·밤·대추·계피·곶감·잣 등을 넣어서 찐 밥 입니다.

 Yakbap is made by steaming glutinous rice soaked in water, then mixing it with honey, sugar, sesame oil, and dried fruits such as jujubes. It's a type of sweet rice cake.

 

귀밝이술  Gwibakju

보름날 아침에 데우지 않은 찬술을 조금씩 마시는 것으로, 귀가 밝아지고 한 해 동안 좋은 소식을 듣는다고 합니다.

Drinking a small amount of cold liquor in the morning of Daeboreum is believed to brighten one's life and bring good news throughout the year.

솔을 깔고 떡을 쪄서 나누어 먹습니다.

Rice cakes are made by laying pine needles on the ground and pounding rice on top of them.

 

 대보름 주요 풍습

보름새기   Moonlight Viewing

설날과 같이 수세하는 풍습으로 온 집안의 등불을 밤을 지새는 것으로, 주로 섣달그믐날의 풍습로 알려져 있지만, 지방에 따라 보름날 밤도 같습니다.

It is a tradition to stay up all night on the fifteenth day of the lunar month, admiring the moonlight inside or outside the house. This tradition is commonly known to take place on the night of the full moon, but it can vary depending on the region.

 

달맞이 Welcoming the Moon

초저녁에 횃불을 들고 높은 곳에 올라 달을 맞으면서 새해의 풍년을 점치고 행운을 비는 풍습입니다.

People climb to high places with torches in the early evening to welcome the rising moon. This act symbolizes predicting a bountiful year ahead and seeking good fortune.

 

더위팔기  Selling Heat

대보름날 아침에 사람을 만나서, "내 더위를 사세요"라고 말해서, 다른 사람에게 여름의 무더위를 파는 풍습입니다.

On the morning of Daeboreum, people meet each other and say, "Please buy my heat." It's a custom of selling the summer heat to others.

 

액막이 연 Flying Fortune Kites

그해의 액운을 멀리 날려 보낸다는 뜻으로 음력 정월 열나흗 날에 띄워 보내는 연으로, 연에는 이름, 생년월일 따위와 송액영복(送厄迎福)과 같은 글귀를 적습니다.

On the 15th day of the lunar month, people fly kites to ward off bad luck and bring good fortune for the year ahead.

다리밟기  Stepping Over Bridges

하천의 다리를 밟고 지나면, 다리가 튼튼해 진다는 것으로, 12개 다리를 건너면 12개월 내내 건강하다는 풍습입니다.

It's believed that if you step over a bridge, it will become stronger. Crossing twelve bridges is thought to ensure health throughout the year.

 

지신밟기  Stepping on Ji-Shin

영남 지방의 대보름 문화로, 농민들이 행렬을 이루어 집을 차례로 찾아가는 풍습입니다.

This tradition, mainly found in the Yeongnam region, involves villagers forming a procession and visiting each other's homes, stepping on the threshold of the house.

 

쥐불놀이 Playing with Burning Grass

대보름 전날 밤에 논두렁의 마른 풀을 태우고, 숯불을 넣은 금속 캔을 돌리는 놀이로, 이제는 거의 하지 않습니다.

On the night before Daeboreum, people burn dried grass on the fields and spin metal cans filled with charcoal, symbolizing the burning away of misfortune.

 

 

달집태우기 Burning a Moon House

볏단으로 달집을 만들어 달이 떠오를 때에 태우면서 풍년을 비는데, 최근엔 거의 하지 않네요.
