Korean New Year: Ritual 'Charye' 차례

한국의 설날: '차례' 의식은 가장 중요한 의식의 하나입니다. 차례는 같이 음식을 준비하고 조상에게 음식을 제공하는 일이 포함됩니다. 그런 다음 온 가족이 함께 모여 조상들이 축복한 음식을 먹으며 새해를 많은 축복과 번영으로 시작하는 '음복'이라는 의식을 거행합니다.
실제로 '차례'는 유교와 관련이 있으며, 현대 한국에서 더욱 다양한 형태로 업데이트되었네요.

One of the most important rituals performed during this auspicious occasion is called ‘charye’. Charye involves the preparation of food by all relatives and the serving of food to ancestors. Then the family gets together for a ceremony called ‘eumbok’ where they eat the food blessed by the ancestors, allowing them to start the new year with many blessings and prosperity. 

Actually, the ritual 'Charye' is related to Confusionism, and modern Korean have updated more different forms.

Korean New Year: Food 'Ddeokguk' 떡국

차례에 준비되는 음식은 지역마다 다르지만 가장 일반적인 종류는 쌀, 국, 고기, 해산물, 술, 과일 및 채소인데, 가장 보편적인 음식은 '떡국'입니다. 떡국은 일년 내내 먹지만 설날에 특별한 의미를 갖습니다. 한국에서는 떡국의 맑은 국물과 흰 떡이 깨끗한 몸과 마음으로 한 해를 시작하는 것을 상징한다고 믿어집니다.

 

Though the food prepared for the ceremony of charye differs by region, the most common varieties are rice, soup, meat, seafood, liquor, fruit and vegetables. Another very common dish is ‘Ddeokguk’ or rice cake soup which, though eaten throughout the year, carries special significance on Seollal. In South Korea, the clear broth and white rice cakes of tteokguk are believed to symbolize starting out the year with a clean mind and body.

Korean New Year: Greeting 'Sebae' 세배

 

따르는 또 다른 중요한 의식은 '세배'입니다. 땅에 무릎을 꿇고 손도 땅에 닿을 정도로 깊이 절하는 행위이다. 젊은이들은 어른들에게 머리 숙여 인사하고 새해 복 많이 받으십시오. 이 깊은 절은 존경을 의미합니다.

 

Another important ritual that is followed is called ‘sebae’. It is the act of kneeling on the ground and bowing deeply so that your hands are also on the ground. Younger people must bow deeply to their elders and wish them a happy new year. This deep traditional bow signifies respect.

Korean New Year:  Costume 'Hanbok'

제사를 지낼 때는 '차례'를 위한 '한복'과 수백, 수천 년 동안 이어온 한국의 전통의상인 '세배'를 입어야 한다. 한복은 주로 조선시대의 전통적인 디자인과 고대 왕국의 복잡한 디자인이 많이 있으며, 최근에는 현대 생활에서 보다 유연하고 현실적으로 사용할 수 있는 현대적인 디자인이 있습니다.

 

While performing the ritual, one must wear ‘Hanbok’ for 'Charye' and 'Sebae' which is traditional costume from old Korea over hundreds and thousands years.  The 'Hanbok' has traditional design from mostly Chosun dynasty and many complicated design from older kingdoms, and recently there are modern design to give more flexible and realistic usage in modern life.

Korean New Year:  Board Game 'Yutnori'

많은 전통놀이가 한국의 설날과 연관되어 있습니다. 전통 가족 보드게임인 '윷놀이'는 특히 설날에 여전히 인기 있는 게임입니다. 특별히 고안된 스틱 세트를 사용하여 연주되며 모든 연령과 성별에 적합합니다. 게임은 네 개의 막대기를 던지고 위쪽을 향한 막대기의 수에 따라 보드 주위로 게임 마커를 움직이는 방식으로 진행됩니다. 각 팀에는 4개의 마커가 있으며 보드 주위에 4개의 마커를 모두 먼저 가져오는 팀이 승리합니다.

 

Many traditional games are associated with the Korean New Year. The traditional family board game ‘Yutnori’ remains a popular game, especially during Korean New Year. It is played using a set of specially designed sticks and is considered appropriate for all ages and genders. The game is played by throwing four sticks and moving your game markers around the board depending on the number of up-facing sticks. Each team has four markers and the first team to get all four of their markers around the board wins.
