벚꽃을 보거나 구경하는 건 좋은데, 가끔 벚꽃 종류에 대해서 궁금해지네요.

 

워싱턴 DC에 위치한 Tidal Basin 은 인공 호수이면서, 미국에서 제일 벚꽃 구경하기가 좋은 명소로 유명합니다.

 

거의 3천그루가 넘는 벚꽃 나무가 있는 것으로 알려져 있는데, 어떤 벚꽃 나무가 있는지 알아보려고 합니다.

 

우선, 워싱턴 DC의 Tidal Basin 에는 벚꽃 나무 종류로만 심어져 있고, 매화꽃은 없는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.

 

한국이나 일본에서는 지역에 따라 벚꽃과 매화꽃이 섞여서 심어져 있는 곳이 종종 있기도 합니다.

특히, 벚꽃 종류를 구별하는 것으로 꽃잎이 흰색이면 요시노 벚꽃 또는 타케멘시스 벚꽃입니다.

 

요시노 벚꽃은 아주 엷은 핑크 빛이 돌기는 하지만, 그래도 전체 톤이 흰색에 가까운 것으로 판단하면 됩니다.

 

요시노 벚꽃이 가장 정통적인 벚꽃으로 한국에서는 왕벚나무로 부르고 있습니다. 

 

핑크색 벚꽃 : 관잔 or 아케보노 or 위핑

관잔 벚꽃은 짙은 핑크 빛을 띄면서, 꽃이 많이 모여있는 형태로 구분하면 되고, 아케보노는 엷은 핑크 빛의 벚꽃입니다.

 

위핑 벚꽃도 조금 짙은 핑크 빛 꽃잎을 가지는데, 가지가 다른 벚꽃 나무와 다른 특성이 있습니다.

 

위핑 벚꽃 (수양벚꽃) : 수양버들처럼 늘어진 가지가 특징

즉, 위핑 벚꽃은 통상 수양 벚꽃으로도 부르는데, 벚꽃 가지가 수양버들처럼 늘어져 있는 것이 특징이고, 꽃잎은 핑크색입니다.  

 

영어로도 위핑 Weeping 이리고 하고, 일본어도 しだれ桜 시다레자쿠라 로 부르는데, 가지가 늘어졌다는 의미입니다.

 

벚꽃 vs 매화꽃 구별 방법

가끔 핑크빛 꽃이 벚꽃 종류인지, 매화꽃인지도 헷갈리기도 합니다.

매화꽃은 매실 나무의 꽃으로 꽃잎 끝이 둥글고 한 곳에 한 개 꽃자루 만 피고, 복사꽃은 꽃잎 끝이 뽀족하고 한 곳에 두송이 꽃자루가 생깁니다.
